The catch is that color laser printers are not nearly as good for printing photo capability output. If you want to be able to print your own photos that are indistinguishable from those you would get at your local photo developer, an inkjet is right on the best choice.

Color laser printers still do a uncostly job for photos, so if you're not seeing for true photo capability they will work fine. And for things like charts or graphs, or any other kind of company or school printing that includes color, they're ideal.

In some cases, it's even worth buying both - a color laser for the bulk of your printing and a photo-quality inkjet for your photo printing.

The other benefit of laser printers over inkjet is the longevity of the toner cartridges. Laser toners won't dry up the way inkjet cartridges will, so if your printer sits idle for long periods, or you mostly print black and white and the color ink doesn't get used very often, you might be best to go with a laser since you won't be wasting cartridges that dry up, driving your printing costs through the roof.

The key is to decide how much you expect to use your printer and what kind of things you'll be printing before you make your decision. Then choose the type that is best excellent for your singular needs.
